Stave off the signs of old age

November 22, 2017

Nothing says ‘old age’ like a pair of wobbly dentures sliding around in your mouth, making it hard to talk and even harder to eat. Most of us want to hide the evidence of our advancing years, using hair dyes, cosmetic surgery, non-cosmetic facelifts, but if your teeth are gone, having dentures will blow your cover no matter how much time and effort you put into the rest of your appearance.

Vanity is one reason why more and more of our patients at My Smile Clinic are choosing to have dental implants in Elsternwick, but it’s not the only one. The other reasons include being able to continue to eat a wide and varied diet, and thereby assimilate all the various nutrients the human body needs to function. Being able to be understood is also pretty high on the list of reasons why people invest in dental implants in Elsternwick. And, of course, there’s a small matter of having a healthy jawbone, something that only dental implants can give you after you have lost your teeth.

The procedure explained

In Elsternwick, dental implants are inserted into the jawbone in a minor surgical procedure that can be carried out under local anaesthetic. There are fewer nerve endings in the jawbone than in the teeth, which makes having implant surgery less likely to be painful. However, that’s not much consolation if you are anxious about having implants, or even going to the dentist at all. Don’t not come though. We can give you sedation, either oral or intravenous. Sedation will make you drowsy and relaxed but responsive, but you may not remember much of the procedure afterwards.

Dental implants take a few weeks to heal and integrate with the jawbone before you can have the crowns fitted. During this time, your jawbone is stimulated by the titanium of the dental implants to produce new bone tissue and blood vessels. They grow all over the surface of the implant, which is often rough and screw-shaped to give it more surface area, and thereby hold it in place. Once the two have integrated, your dental implant will be held as securely in place as a natural tooth, and you can eat whatever you like.
