Combatting missing teeth with dental implants

October 13, 2017

Losing teeth can be an inevitable part of growing older. It can also be a very stressful experience for many of us. But, here at My Smile Clinic, losing teeth isn’t the end of the world.

We offer a solution for replacing missing teeth. In Elsternwick, dental implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. They are a great alternative to dentures and dental bridges.

Treatments like dentures and dental bridges come with downsides. For example, dentures can become loose over time, often causing more trouble than they are worth, and bridges often require adjacent teeth to be filed down so that the bridge can be fitted.

Dental implants in Elsternwick: a fresh alternative

Dental implants are small titanium screws that placed in the jaw to create a stable anchor for crowns, bridges and dentures.

The screw effectively works as an artificial tooth root, helping the jawbone and gums remain in great shape. Shrinking gums and jawbone, caused by insufficient stimulation from a tooth root or implants, are problems that many denture users have to deal with.

A benefit of a dental implant is that they have the potential to last you a lifetime. If they are looked after well, they could give you years of smiles and allow you to enjoy the foods you love to eat.

Dental implants in Elsternwick: our procedure

The first step is to make an appointment with our dental implant surgeon, Dr Geeta Perks. In this initial appointment, you can have any questions or concerns addressed.

During this appointment, if you’re happy for treatment to go ahead, our surgeon will assess you to see if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. She will also plan how best to carry out your surgery.

The surgery consists of a small hole being created in your jawbone and the titanium screw inserted firmly. The treatment works with the natural healing process of your body, creating a stable base for your appliance to be fitted.

Between the fitting of the implant and the attachment of a crown, bridge or dentures, you’ll need to allow for some healing time. Usually, this is fairly quick, so you’ll be smiling again in no time.
